Top Schools on the Eastside by Harvard / Princeton / MIT Placements
Polaris — the Atlas's count of graduates over the past five years who matriculated to Harvard, Princeton, or MIT — captures a different signal from the Smarter Balanced or SAT-driven composite rankings. Polaris does not measure the median student; it measures the very top of the senior class, the students who clear admissions readers at the three highest-yield, lowest-acceptance-rate universities in the country. On the Eastside, the Polaris ranking reorders the public-school leaderboard in interesting ways and pulls a handful of private K-12 schools into direct comparison with the public comprehensives.
Interlake Senior High in Bellevue leads the Eastside Polaris list with thirteen Harvard/Princeton/MIT matriculations over five years — the second-highest total of any Washington school of any kind. Interlake hosts the Bellevue School District's Highly Capable program (about a third of the student body) and offers an unusually compressed International Baccalaureate sequence: students in the Advanced Learning track complete the IB Diploma in tenth and eleventh grades, leaving senior year for additional college-level courses and an internship. The school is one of the few in the world that allows students to begin the IB Diploma program in tenth grade rather than eleventh.
Redmond High and Bellevue High follow at ranks two and three with six Polaris matriculations each. Mercer Island, Tesla STEM, and Newport (each with five Polaris counts) round out the top six. Eastside Catholic School in Sammamish, at rank seven with four Polaris matriculations, is the highest-ranked private school on this list — a Catholic 6-12 school of about 880 students that offers thirty-five-plus advanced courses and that places students at Stanford, Duke, Penn, and Caltech alongside the elite-three on Polaris. Skyline at rank eight (three Polaris matriculations) and Eastside Preparatory at rank nine (an independent K-12 in Kirkland with about 520 students, three Polaris matriculations) close out the top nine, with Lake Washington High at tenth.
The most striking feature of the data is how thoroughly Bellevue School District dominates the Polaris-driven view. Interlake (rank 1), Bellevue (rank 3), and Newport (rank 6) all place in the top six, with three combined Bellevue district schools accounting for twenty-five Polaris matriculations — more than any other district in the region. Lake Washington School District places three (Redmond, Tesla, Lake Washington High), Issaquah places one (Skyline), and Mercer Island places one. Notably, Interlake's polaris-leading position is not visible on the SAT/grad-rate composite because the school's four-year graduation rate (under 80 percent) reflects how the district counts IB Diploma seekers who take an extra year to complete the program — a statistical quirk that hides the school's elite-college outcomes in conventional measures.
A note on scope: this ranking orders public and private high (and K-12) schools on the Eastside by their five-year Polaris matriculation count to Harvard, Princeton, or MIT. The matriculation data is sourced from a combination of school college-counseling reports, public matriculation lists, and verified independent reporting. SAT, AP, and SBA figures are shown alongside Polaris but do not drive the ranking; private schools without OSPI Report Card data appear with blanks for those columns by design.
