Spring Street International School is a K-12 independent on San Juan Island, founded in 2003 and located in downtown Friday Harbor. It is the only independent K-12 on the island and one of the few schools in Washington authorized to offer the full International Baccalaureate continuum — Primary Years (K-5), Middle Years (6-10), and Diploma Programme (11-12). Enrollment runs around 150 students drawn from the island plus a small international boarding cohort.
Among Washington private schools, Spring Street's distinguishing feature is the full IB continuum at independent-school scale. Most WA schools offering the IB Diploma are large public high schools — Ingraham in Seattle, Inglemoor in Kenmore, Mount Rainier in Des Moines. Among independents, end-to-end PYP-through-DP authorization is rare. The tradeoff is the location: island enrollment is necessarily small, the campus serves a community an order of magnitude smaller than mainland indies, and the program lacks the elective breadth of a larger school. Families choosing Spring Street are typically choosing the IB pedagogy and the island setting explicitly, not a wide menu of programs.
The campus sits two blocks from the Friday Harbor ferry terminal. The school is accredited by the Northwest Association of Independent Schools and authorized as an IB World School for all three programmes. International students board with host families on the island, which gives the school an unusual demographic mix for its size.
