Sumner High School sits on Main Street in downtown Sumner, anchoring the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District in eastern Pierce County and serving about 1,990 students as a 4A campus. The school's roots reach back more than a century, and the building has been substantially expanded, most recently in a 2023 modernization that updated classrooms and athletic facilities at Sunset Stadium.
Academically, the school offers a broad menu of Advanced Placement courses, dual-credit pathways, and Career and Technical Education programs that align with the district's Classrooms-to-Careers initiative. The Spartans compete in the South Puget Sound League at the 4A level, with strong wrestling and cross country traditions; the wrestling program reached the 2025 WIAA team finals.
In 2026, Sumner was among six Sumner-Bonney Lake schools cited by OSPI's Washington School Recognition Program for student growth. The district publishes a community magazine, Scoop 320, and continues to invest in capital improvements approved through the 2024 bond. Recent years have also brought scrutiny: a former coach was convicted in 2025, prompting policy reviews now reflected in the district's safety protocols.
