Steilacoom High School opened in 1981 as the only high school in the Steilacoom Historical School District, drawing about 990 students from Steilacoom, Anderson Island, DuPont, and parts of Lakewood and University Place in southern Pierce County. A $23 million modernization completed in 2009 expanded classroom and athletic spaces.
Academics include the AP Capstone Diploma, a robust Advanced Placement catalog, Running Start, College in the High School, and access to the Pierce County Skills Center. The school operates an Army JROTC program and earned the 2026 Purple Star Award for support of military-connected students from Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Steilacoom has been named to the U.S. News Best High Schools list seven straight years and to the College Board's 2024 AP School Honor Roll, and was cited as a 2025 Washington School on the Rise.
The Sentinels compete in the South Puget Sound League at the 2A level. Recent seasons have featured a top finish in the SPSL 2A cross country championships, a 9-0 league volleyball run, and an undefeated September football start under coach Kyle Haller.
