Shelton High School is the only comprehensive high school in the Shelton School District and the largest school in Mason County, serving about 1,470 students from the timber-and-shellfish town of Shelton at the south end of Hood Canal. The unusual Highclimbers nickname is drawn from the loggers who once climbed and topped tall trees in the surrounding forests.
The Highclimbers compete in the WIAA 3A South Sound Conference. The football program won state titles in 1974 and 1985 under longtime coach Ken Stark, and the boys basketball team captured a 1977 state championship — milestones that the Shelton-Mason County Journal continues to revisit. Highclimber Stadium and Highclimber Field anchor a fall and spring sports schedule that draws community-wide attention.
Academic programs include AP coursework, CTE pathways tied to the marine and natural-resource economy, and dual credit through Olympic College. Senior celebrations, an annual Black-vs-Red preseason football scrimmage with a community kickoff parade led by Mason County first responders, and graduation coverage in the Journal mark the school year.
