Bellevue Big Picture School is one of two choice schools serving grades 6-12 in the Bellevue School District. With about 350 students, it follows the national Big Picture Learning model, in which the central feature is the Learning Through Interests (LTI) internship program: students spend portions of each week working with adult mentors on real-world projects in fields they choose to explore.
The school is in the middle of a major relocation. The Bellevue School District is moving Big Picture from its current site to the former Eastgate Elementary at 4255 153rd Avenue SE, expanding the building from 72,056 to 100,135 square feet to accommodate a planned capacity of about 525 middle and high school students. Edmonds-based contractor Spee West won the construction contract at just under $38 million, well below the district's earlier estimates of $80-90 million for an on-site rebuild, with a target completion in time for the 2026-27 school year.
The new Eastgate facility will add science and STEM spaces, a commons, weight and locker rooms, gender-neutral restrooms, a solar array, and LED-lighting retrofits.
