BASIS Independent Bellevue is the Pacific Northwest campus of the BASIS Independent network — a national chain that also operates schools in Silicon Valley, Fremont, McLean (Virginia), Manhattan, and Brooklyn. The Bellevue campus opened in 2022 and is still expanding into a full K-12 footprint; current enrollment is around 231 students with a 7:1 student-teacher ratio, and admissions are open through Grade 9 as the upper school grows.
The pedagogical model differs sharply from the established Eastside/Seattle elite secular set (Lakeside School, The Overlake School, Eastside Preparatory School, University Prep, Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences). BASIS requires four AP courses and exams of every student and makes AP coursework available starting in 9th grade rather than gating it to upper-class top performers. Subject-expert teachers lead classes from middle school onward, and the program closes with required Capstone courses and a Senior Project. Across the BASIS Independent network, 100% of 2025 graduates earned AP Scholar distinction.
The structural tradeoffs against peer Seattle-area independents are real. BASIS schools are tuition-funded ($37,380 at the upper grade) for-profit operations under Spring Education Group, following a national curriculum, while peer Eastside independents are individual nonprofit institutions with locally-developed programs. The accelerated track produces strong AP outcomes and selective-college placements within the network, but BASIS Bellevue is too new to have built the regional alumni and feeder relationships the older independents trade on. Reputation among Eastside families is still actively forming as the first cohorts move through.
