Best Public Middle Schools in Vancouver, WA
The Vancouver-area middle-school landscape splits along the same district lines as the high-school version: Camas at the top of measured outcomes, the larger Evergreen and Vancouver Public Schools districts in the middle, and Battle Ground and the smaller Hockinson and Ridgefield districts holding the rural and exurban edge. Camas School District is widely regarded as the strongest in the region — the district has been recognized by the Washington Achievement Award and the Green Ribbon program — and three of its middle schools place in the top four of this list.
Skyridge Middle in Camas leads the list. Skyridge is the largest of the district's middle schools at about 750 students and posts 63 percent math and 78 percent ELA proficiency, the highest ELA rate in Clark County. Odyssey Middle, also Camas, is second; Odyssey is the district's choice middle school, with about 280 students enrolled in a project-based, integrated-curriculum format that enrolls by lottery, and it led this list last year. View Ridge Middle in Ridgefield is third, the strongest showing by a Ridgefield school on any regional list and a reflection of that district's rapid growth. Hockinson Middle in Brush Prairie is fourth; the Hockinson district enrolls only about 2,000 students K-12 but consistently places its middle school near the top of regional rankings.
Liberty Middle in Camas, at fifth, gives the Camas district three of the top five spots. Alki Middle in the Vancouver Public Schools' Hudson's Bay area is sixth, the highest-ranked Vancouver Public Schools middle school. Chief Umtuch Middle in Battle Ground and Shahala Middle in Vancouver (Evergreen district) follow. Tukes Valley and Pleasant Valley Middle, both Battle Ground, close out the top ten; Battle Ground places three middle schools in the top ten despite being the most rural of the major Clark County districts.
The data shape is worth flagging. The top of this list is more compressed than the equivalent Vancouver high-school list: only three points separate Skyridge's 63 percent math proficiency from View Ridge's 60, but the gap to the tenth-ranked school (41 percent at Pleasant Valley) is meaningful. Camas's three-school showing reflects both a high-income catchment and the district's deliberate investment in a choice-school option (Odyssey) alongside its conventional comprehensives.
A note on scope: this ranking covers public middle schools whose attendance area is in Clark County, ordered by Smarter Balanced math and ELA proficiency averages from OSPI's most recent Report Card. SAT, AP, and Polaris figures are unavailable at the middle-school level. Schools with fewer than thirty tested students are excluded for statistical stability. Charter and option schools are eligible if classified as public; private middle schools, including Seton Catholic and several Christian schools, appear in a separate ranking.
