Best Public Middle Schools in Seattle
Seattle's public middle-school ranking is shaped by two structural facts. First, Seattle Public Schools is the largest district in the state, and most of its middle schools serve heterogeneous catchments that span large income and demographic gradients within a single building. Second, the surrounding districts — Lake Washington, Bellevue, Mercer Island, Northshore, Shoreline — share Seattle's labor market and pull onto the Atlas's Seattle ranking when their attendance areas fall inside the regional definition. The result is a list that mixes Seattle Public Schools' biggest north-end middle schools with the Eastside choice programs that share a commute zone.
Environmental & Adventure School (EAS) in Kirkland leads the list — a Lake Washington School District choice middle school of about 140 students that runs a place-based outdoor curriculum, with multi-week field-study expeditions as a core part of the program. Islander Middle on Mercer Island ranks second. Hamilton International Middle in the Wallingford neighborhood (Seattle Public Schools' rank-three entrant on this list) operates as a dual-language continuation campus with Spanish and Japanese language-arts options for students coming up from John Stanford International and McDonald International, plus a heritage-language pathway that prepares students for the high-school IB program at Ingraham.
Eckstein, Robert Eagle Staff, Madison, McClure, and Whitman are all Seattle Public Schools' larger neighborhood middle schools, sitting at ranks four through nine. Eckstein, in the Wedgwood-Bryant area, is among the largest middle schools in the city by enrollment (above 1,000 students); Robert Eagle Staff opened in 2017 in north Seattle on the former Wilson-Pacific site, named for the Native American educator. Madison serves West Seattle, McClure serves Queen Anne, and Whitman covers the Crown Hill and Greenwood corridor. Kirkland Middle (rank 7) is a Lake Washington district school whose feeder area touches the Sand Point area. Rainier Prep, at tenth, is a Seattle charter middle school in the Rainier Beach neighborhood — one of the very few charter middle schools in the Atlas data and the only one in Seattle's top ten.
A pattern worth highlighting: the SBA math proficiency gap between the top-ranked Seattle middle school (EAS at 85 percent) and the tenth-ranked (Rainier Prep at 59 percent) is wider here than in the Eastside ranking — reflecting the much greater demographic range across Seattle Public Schools' middle schools. The dual-language and choice programs cluster at the top of the list; the larger neighborhood comprehensives sit in the middle.
A note on scope: this ranking covers public middle schools whose attendance area falls inside the Seattle region as defined in the Atlas data layer, ordered by Smarter Balanced math and ELA proficiency averages from OSPI's published Report Card. SAT, AP, and Polaris figures are unavailable at the middle-school level. Schools with fewer than thirty tested students are excluded for statistical stability. Charter and option schools are eligible if classified as public; private middle schools — Bush, Lakeside Middle, Seattle Country Day — appear in a separate ranking.
